      HERS Testing FAQs

      1What is a HERS test?
A HERS (Home Energy Rating System) test is an independent, third-party field verification required by California's Title 24 energy code. A certified HERS rater measures duct leakage, airflow, fan watt draw, or refrigerant charge to confirm the work meets state efficiency standards, then registers the results so your project can pass final inspection.
2When does Title 24 require a HERS test?
Most commonly when an HVAC system is replaced or newly installed, when ductwork is replaced or extended, and on new construction, additions, and ADUs. Your permit's CF1R form lists exactly which verifications apply — send it to us and we'll tell you what's required.
3How long does a HERS test take?
Most residential visits take about one to two hours on site, depending on how many verifications your permit requires. We schedule two-hour arrival windows across all of Southern California, seven days a week.
4What happens if my system fails the test?
You'll know on the spot, and the rater will explain exactly what failed and why — for example, duct leakage above the allowed percentage. Your contractor corrects the issue, we retest, and once it passes we register the passing results.
5What is a CF3R and why does my inspector want it?
The CF3R is the certificate of verification a HERS rater registers with a state-approved registry such as CHEERS after your system passes. Most Southern California building departments require the registered CF3R before they'll sign off on your final inspection.
6How fast do I get my certificate?
Once your system passes, we register the paperwork right away — customers routinely receive their certificate by email the same day, so your final inspection isn't held up.
